You have almost completed this semester, so how do you view Critical Literacy now? If you have any comments and suggestions, please do so as it helps for the betterment of the course as a whole

In another couples of month, this semester will end. It just around the corner, and for now I think that Critical Literacy subject is a really interesting subject, as the student get the chance to analyze many good articles and movies from famous and credible person. The student get the chances to search for the weakness of this person and the strength to be follow.

I also think that this subject is quite tough, because it push the student to a new level of thinking. It need someone to be really critical in thinking to solve the question. This subject is also need the students to do lot of reading in order to gain more knowledge, as we dealing of article that need to be answer and analyze by our knowledge of outside world.

In a conclusion, i think this subject is a really good subject. Because it can practise the student to be a good thinker and can give many experience towards the students. As experience can give us happiness.

Proposition: "Hollywood produces great movies, but they don't always tell the truth even it based on 'True Stories". Provide at least two (2) premises or counter arguments for the proposition. Write in complete paragraph(s).

I disagree with the proposition "Hollywood produces great movies, but they don't always tell the truth even it based on 'True Stories" because I think that, they are telling the truth but their give some modification towards some plot to make it more interesting. This is because what the producers main objective is to gain profits and fame instead of telling the world what is trully happen based on the stories.

For example, the movie Pain & Gain starring some of famous actor such Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie. Danny Lupo (Mark Wahlberg), manager of the Sun Gym in 1990s Miami, decides that there is only one way to achieve his version of the American dream: extortion. To achieve his goal, he recruits musclemen Paul (Dwayne Johnson) and Adrian (Anthony Mackie) as accomplices. After several failed attempts, they abduct rich businessman Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub) and convince him to sign over all his assets to them. But when Kershaw makes it out alive, authorities are reluctant to believe his story.

Some scene were 100 percent the same with the real event and some are close, mean that the producer still try to tell how the real event was with some modification on some scene. As  follow is the interview with the true victims conduct by MiamiNewTimes.

Were the kidnappers really screw-ups?
"Yes. The mishaps of the real kidnappers makes it easy to see why Michael Bay decided to turn Pete Collins' Pain & Gain article into a dark comedy, shifting the focus away from the more serious side of the Pain and Gain true story. With one victim, the real Sun Gym gang used too much horse tranquilizer. Vehicles that the trio used in the kidnapping attempts wouldn't start, including outside of Schlotzsky's Sandwich Shop, which was then owned by survivor Marc Schiller. A chainsaw that they planned to use to cut up bodies failed to start because they forgot to put motor oil in it (in the movie, an electric chainsaw becomes clogged with hair). They burnt out the engine trying to start it, prompting them to return the saw to Home Depot. These mishaps are in addition to it taking roughly a half-dozen tries to successfully kidnap me" Marc Schiller. -MiamiNewTimes

So i think that, the proposition above can't be accepted.

"If money  were the only criterion by which a child's welfare can be gauged, then a baby bought for as much as RM40,000 on the black market would seem set for life. For money- rich but child poor couples, it is a small price to pay to introduce a small life into their home. The cot is gilded, the blanket monogrammed, the college fund filled to the brim. All that's wanting is a bun in the oven. And where there is a baby-for-sale racket, money can indeed buy happiness. And after all, why not?" (NST, March 3, 2013)How do you view above statements?

After reading the statements, firtsly i believed that it is an illegal action to do a business in black market such as baby laundering and I also believe that they do that is not because of happiness but because they are desperate. People will do anything if they are desperate without thinking about the consequences, if they were caught by the cops or by the responsible authority by the act of dealing a business in black market it is surely will not bring any happiness towards both parties.

The rich couples that willing to buy babies from black market is categorize as an immoral person. But if try to think outside of the box, it can secure the baby from the poor family future. With the fund from the rich family, the baby health, studies and whatsoever will be a lot more complete, but if the baby when they grow up and they find out that they are not really the kids of the couples it will surely bring sadness to them.

As what have been stated in forbes megazine by David di Salvo "spending money on things, no matter how elaborate, leaves us wanting more, while spending on experiences, especially with other people, yields long-term fulfillment"(2014) .

As the conclusion, I believe that money can buy happiness but not form a long-term future.

Stereotyping is exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system, they go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basis. It is also something that most people find difficulties to avoid from doing. What do you think?

Okay first of all, what I understand about Stereotyping is, it is when someone make a bad assumption towards others. Stereotyping is happen when someone oversimplified something.  Stereotype is simply a widely held belief that an individual is a member of a certain group based on charcteristics. Due to the process of overgeneralization within social perception, stereotyping leads to a great deal of inaccuracy in social perception.

Sex, race, age, sexual orentation, religion and physical ability are various catagories which exist in stereotyping. The most prevalent and controversial forms are sex and race.

There is three main factors that lead towards stereotyping. Firstly, stereotypes are functional, as a human we are always receive much more information than we can process. Then our tendency is to reduce our problem and try to go as simple as we can. We try to make it simple, which can lead to inaccuracy and we are often unaware of this deduction. Secondly stereotypes are results of selectivity in social perception, we tend to see what we expect to see, and we have a tendency to change and distort the characteristics of others until it fits our stereotype of something. Third factor is stereotype is prejudice: This is the most influential factor in stereotyping. Our perceptions are highly subjective, and many people subscribe to insult other ethnic groups. Unfortunately the selectivity of a person's perception result in people seeing what they expect to see when they come in contact with members of an ethnic group they view with prejudice.

But, I think with learning this subject someone can reduce their tedency to stereotype on something. When they try to think with an empathy towards others.

Assalamualaikum to everyone.

As a semester four of Diploma in English Communication student at Kolej Profesional Mara, I have to take Critical Literacy COM 2533 subject. And my first post will be about my expectation towards this subject

It is true that before this when I am in semester two and three, I heard a lot about this subject from seniors, telling that this subject is hard and difficult to carry and so on. When the first time I heard about this subject, there is nothing much in my mind except that I just thinking if i can carry this subject, because this subject need someone that can think outside of the box. But, I believe in myself that I can do it and I will try to do my best on this subject. But when i assign with the first assignment that I need to review on some article I feel a little bit presure and untill now I still feel the presure to adept with this subject. However, I think that this is a really good subject because it help us to be a really good thinker, critical thinker and to develop many good charecteristics. It also can help me to gain more information and knowledge because I need to do a lot of reading in learning this subject.

But now, i feel excited and eager to learn this subject, because this subject teach more about how we think of something. What is our assumption towards something, and how to change what we think about something. I love to learn about how our mind work and why we think that way.

Laslty, I hope that i can pass and score this subject without repeating it in the next semester. And I also hope that this subject will help me to become a better person especially in making desicion, because I always making stupid decision without thinking critically.
